NIV – New International Version
The “International” in the NIV (New International Version) Bible [1] is named because of the International team consists “up to 100 people from the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa and the range of those participating included over twenty different denominations such as Baptists, Evangelicals, Methodists, Lutherans, Anglicans, and more”. The texts in the Old Testament includes Biblia Hebraica Masoretic Hebrew Text, other ancient texts consulted were the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Aquila, Symmachus and Theodotion, the Latin Vulgate, the Syriac Peshitta, the Aramaic Targums, and for the Psalms the Juxta Hebraica of Jerome.
The goal for New International Version (NIV) translation is [2] “to be an accurate translation and one that would have clarity and literary quality and so prove suitable for public and private reading, teaching, preaching, memorizing and liturgical use.” The challenge was to obtain accuracy and fidelity in the perspective of bible writers when translating into simple English that can be accepted by most kind of people (in respect to those who possess basic English reading and comprehension skills). Each completion of both translation and revision was tested many times to various kinds of people for ease of reading and comprehension. The other challenge is to maintain the English to be accepted Internationally and inter-denomination, the English is maintained contemporer unbound by time.
